CHUCK GREENE BIO

Chuck was born into a musical family in Scott County, 

Virginia, at the base of the Clinch Mountains. His father was from the Southside of the Clinch Mountain, and his mother was from the Northside. At all the family gatherings, bluegrass music and singing would always take place, and from a young age, the children were encouraged to perform. Many bluegrass artists are also from this area, including the Stanley Brothers. Chuck even tells the story of meeting Ralph Stanley at the tractor shop.

At nine years old, Chuck’s first instrument was a mandolin, and he dreamed of one day being like Bill Monroe. He added playing guitar, bass, and banjo, and in his teens, he formed a band and began to perform at all the area clubs and festivals.

He took mandolin lessons from bluegrass musician Jack Tottle in the back of a pawn/music shop in downtown Kingsport, TN. Tottle later became the World-renowned instructor who established the ETSU Bluegrass Program that spun out the likes of Alison Krauss, Kenny Chesney, and countless others.

Chuck’s first real professional radio performance was with Lightnin’ Joe Goode and Jimmy Smith on Jimmy’s weekly radio show at WDUF in Duffield, VA. Jimmy formerly played with the Everly Brothers, Carl Smith, and Jim Reeves. Chuck also joined Charlie Mack Daugherty each year at the Christmas show at the Carter Fold and accompanied other artists in the region, including Andrena Belcher at the Down Home, in Johnson City, TN.

Chuck hung up his music career for a while, and his first job was traveling the country working for Dale Jett of Hello Stranger fame as a millwright. He is back now and has been performing throughout TN, NC, VA, at small clubs, and festivals.

This debut CD, “New Timey,” is a combination of bluegrass classics and Chuck’s original songs mixed with songs by his favorite songwriters, Bob Dylan and John Prine. Joining Chuck on guitar, bass, mandolin, and banjo on the recording are Nashville session musician Wanda Vick Burchfield on fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and Chuck’s old friend, Alex Ball, on fiddle and mandolin, from Deep Gap, NC, home of Doc Watson.

Chuck has taken the structure of old-time mountain music and expanded it into its own genre, called “New Timey.”

The CD was recorded at Cowboy Lizard Studio in Nashville and produced by Scott Tutt for release on Reptile Records. Recently Tutt has produced three #1 records on bluegrass artist Billy Wise & Mountain Time. Although this is Reptile’s first bluegrass release, the label has previously charted records in the Americana, Country, and Pop charts.
